Here's a postcard from this girl named Kathy Schuster I had this HUGE crush on in the summer of "85! She was the next door neighbor's older teenage cousin (she was 15! I was 12 going on 13...) who came all the way from Dubuque, Iowa to look after her younger cousins (the Jacques kids, Andre and Nicole). Anyways, I thought she was the shit! She was funny and weird and ohmygod, I thought she looked like Stef (played by Martha Plimpton) from the Goonies, the movie I was, like, a total fanatic about (I saw it about three times that summer- a lot for a kid who got a quarter a week for allowance!)! She'd hang out with us neighborhood kids cuz we were a little closer to her age than her cousins and we'd all goof off doing whatever. She was interested in this guy named Josh, a kid from my class who lived across the street and who dressed up like a ninja and would run around hiding from bush to bush. I didn't care that she liked him, cuz I once accidentally caught a glimpse of her vagina though the legs of her shorts when we were all on the steps of her cousins' house and I was entranced! Sorry, she wasn't wearing underwear and I was just in the middle of starting my puberty! The summer of '85 was one of the best times of my life now that I think about it! Kathy Schuster! Puberty! The Goonies! My discovery of comic books (read about it on my other blog "The Quarter Bin")! Pop Music! Anyways, I could go on and on; so here's the postcard!
In case the scan is too light, here's what Kathy wrote:
"Jeff, HI! Happy Late Birthday! Mine is August 25. I'm doing OK. Is the Ninjah (Josh) still running around free. Now that I think of it, I really didn't care for him. I just missed Tim. Well if I did or didn't like Josh it was a passing thing. It is good to be back home."
Kathy update! A bunch of years ago during my last year of college I temped at a wharehouse here in Madison where I met this slightly older guy Dennis. After a bunch of months of working there it's brought up that he was from Dubuque and I remember that suddenly my eyes lit up and I asked him that if by chance he knew Kathy Schuster. Wow! She was his best friend's step-sister and they used to hang out! He said that she ended up running away from home to get eloped to some really old dude who rode a motorcycle. Wow! I still love her!
